Emamma Vinave

Composer: Ceyyoor Cengalvaraaya Shaastree
Ragam: Surutti
Talam: Adi
Choreography & Musical Arrangement: Yamini Kalluri

Emamma Vinave is a theatrical Kuchipudi work born from an instinctive love for the groove and melodic vitality of Surutti raga. Its rhythmic swing naturally complements the buoyant, playful spirit of Kuchipudi.

The piece opens with the entrance of Devi. Through an exploration of nava vidha bhakti — the nine modes of devotion — the devotee invokes her, yearning for the goddess to transform from a stone murti in the temple into a living, breathing presence before her.

After praise, surrender, pleading, and confrontation, the miracle occurs. Devi manifests — fierce, radiant, and overwhelming. Confronted with the raw intensity of divine presence, the devotee recoils: “Please… I am not ready.”

The work poses a central question:

If God were to actually appear before us, are we truly ready to face that presence?

A transformation unfolds. The fierce goddess softens:

  • The tiger she rides becomes a lotus seat.

  • Her paasham becomes a gentle bird.

  • Her trishoolam transforms into a veena.

  • Her chakra becomes the crescent moon adorning her head.

Through these symbolic shifts, the choreography traces the movement from ferocity to serenity — from awe to intimacy.

Yet in the final comedic twist, the devotee admits she prefers Devi as stone — distant, contained, and manageable. The goddess returns to stillness in the temple.

The piece leaves us with a subtle truth: we often pray for revelation and transformation, but when confronted with the full vigor of the divine, we hesitate. Devotion is easy from a distance. Encounter is something else entirely.

Rooted in Kuchipudi’s theatrical and satirical tradition, Emamma Vinave balances bhakti, humor, and philosophical inquiry.
