Learning Kuchipudi Online

Hi, I’m Yamini, the founder of Kritya Foundation and a full-time professional Kuchipudi dancer based in the United States. Kritya Foundation is primarily an online Kuchipudi dance school and community where I teach both group and private lessons virtually. My journey as an online teacher began over twelve years ago, first on Skype and later on Zoom. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching students from all over the world, and the virtual medium has never hindered our learning process.

As a Gen Z individual who’s naturally tech-savvy, teaching online has always felt intuitive to me. While online teaching requires specific skills, it can be a deeply fulfilling experience when you’re part of the right community with an attentive and adaptable teacher. In fact, a significant part of my own education in modern dance, ballet, Carnatic singing, and Mridangam has taken place online, which has been incredibly rewarding. Having experienced online classes as both a student and a teacher, I understand the unique demands and needs of both roles.

The Key to Successful Online Dance Classes

One of my strengths as a teacher is my ability to mirror movements seamlessly, from simple steps to intricate choreographies. This skill ensures that teaching online feels just as natural as teaching in person. However, I recognize that not all teachers find it easy to adapt to the virtual format—disorientation and a lack of clarity can make online classes frustrating for students.

To overcome these challenges, teachers need to be tech-savvy and make the most of tools like Zoom to create an engaging and personalized experience. Here’s how I approach my online classes and this is why I believe people can learn Kuchipudi or any dance style online in that matter.

  • Spotlighting Students: I spotlight different students every few minutes, allowing everyone to feel seen and receive equal attention.

  • Weekly Assignments: Students submit weekly homework and present it during class, helping them stay consistent in their practice.

  • Community Building: Breakout rooms are used for group activities, fostering collaboration and camaraderie among students.

  • Beyond Dance: We often share stories, discuss our passion for Kuchipudi, and support each other as a close-knit community, staying connected through WhatsApp groups for daily updates and inspiration. Also I have phone calls and personal video calls with my students time to time to check on my students.

  • Creating a Sacred Space: I encourage students to dress appropriately and set up a dedicated, sacred space for practice, making each class feel special.

  • Showcase Performances: Virtual student showcases allow performers to gain confidence while presenting their work to a global audience.

  • Practice Resources: We provide revision materials and a structured library system to ensure students have everything they need to practice systematically.

  • Creating a Sacred Space II: Before joining your dance class, it can be helpful to take a few moments to meditate and center yourself, allowing your mind to shift focus from the day’s previous activities. If possible, create a space free from distractions—a quiet, dedicated area where you can immerse yourself in the experience of learning and practicing Kuchipudi.

That said, I understand this may not always be feasible, especially if you’re a new mother or a corporate professional juggling responsibilities and calls. Life can get hectic, but the key is to do your best. Even if your environment isn’t perfectly suited for practice, the most important thing is showing up consistently.

Progress and consistency matter far more than perfection. Don’t let the quest for an ideal setup become an excuse to skip classes or avoid dancing altogether. By showing up regularly, even in less-than-ideal circumstances, you’re making a commitment to your growth and staying on the path to improvement. Your dedication is what truly counts.

Combining Online and In-Person Training

While virtual classes are incredibly effective, they aren’t a complete substitute for in-person experiences. Kuchipudi is more than just a dance style—it’s a language and tradition deeply rooted in culture. To truly immerse yourself in this art form, it’s essential to attend live performances and participate in in-person workshops or intensives.

At Kritya Foundation, we offer several opportunities for in-person engagement, including private intensives where students travel to work with me directly. These immersive experiences complement online training, allowing students to dive deeper into the tradition and refine their skills. We also curate the Annual NY Kuchipudi Dance Festival for our students and the Kuchipudi community worldwide to watch seasoned Kuchipudi dancers every year so this inspires the students to keep up with their practice.

Finding the Right Teacher

One of the most critical aspects of learning Kuchipudi online is choosing the right teacher. It’s better to learn from someone who lays a solid foundation, even if they’re far away, than from a nearby teacher who may instill incorrect habits that are difficult to unlearn. A strong teacher-student connection, open communication, and occasional in-person interactions can make your learning journey truly transformative.

At Kritya Foundation, I strive to build personal, loving relationships with all my students. Together, we create an environment where learning Kuchipudi becomes not just a technical endeavor but a deeply enriching and holistic experience.

If you’re passionate about Kuchipudi and seeking a supportive, vibrant community, I invite you to join us. Let’s explore the beauty of this timeless art form together!

Cultivating the Right Mindset as an Online Student

As an online student, cultivating the right mindset and habits can significantly enhance your learning experience. Here are a few essential tips to help you succeed:

  • Create a Practice Space: If possible, have a mirror in your practice area. A mirror helps you monitor your alignment and refine your movements as you practice.

  • Incorporate Physical Training: Complement your dance practice with other forms of physical training, such as yoga or Pilates. These activities strengthen your body, improve flexibility, and enhance your mind-body connection, all of which are vital for dance.

  • Record Your Practice: Regularly record your practice sessions and share them with your teacher for detailed feedback. This allows you to track your progress and make corrections effectively.

  • Be Proactive and Disciplined: As an online student, you must take responsibility for your learning. Stay proactive, follow through with assignments, and maintain a consistent practice schedule to maximize your growth.

  • Practice Mindfulness: Engage in mindfulness exercises before class to help you stay present and focused. This ensures you get the most out of each session.

  • Minimize Distractions: Put your computer on “Do Not Disturb” mode during class to maintain concentration and avoid interruptions.

By embracing these practices and maintaining a disciplined approach, you can create a productive and enriching environment for your online learning journey.
